Catalogue Note

While resident in Trieste, Burton twice took leave to visit Midian in search of its ancient goldmines. The trips are documented in The Gold Mines of Midian and the Ruined Midianite Cities (1878, see lot 221), and The Land of Midian (Revisited) (1879, see lot 222), as well as in the present volume of the Journal of the RGS.
