Catalogue Note

Bradbury's journey was undertaken to sample plants in the New Orleans area at the request of the Botanical Society of Liverpool. In an early audience with Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, Bradbury was convinced to make his way to St. Louis, from whence his travels began. He met an aging Daniel Boone, travelled with H.M. Brackenridge and Wilson Hunt, and collected many valuable specimens in Ohio, Kentucky and the Missouri territory. "One of the most accurate and pleasingly written travel accounts of this period of American history"  (Clark, Old South 2:137).
