Catalogue Note

Bernacchi, the first Australian to set foot on the Antarctic continent, relates the first deliberate wintering in Antarctica on the Southern Cross expedition of 1898-1900.

"Bernacchi’s account is a gem in the Antarctic literature… To him we are indebted for many beautiful literary images of the voyage. Bernacchi was only twenty-six at the time of publication but had an unmistakable writing ability, amply confirmed in his subsequent literary output; the work is attractively illustrated with photographs taken by the author” (Rosove).

"The original cloth binding of this first issue is quite friable, with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition" (Taurus).
