Condition
Overall the condition of the terracotta is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There has been some restoration to the corners and edges (particularly at the top), particularly visible at the reverse. There are some chips to the edges, including a larger one at the top right side. There are some very slight stable fissures, in particular around the main crucifix. There are some dark areas of discolouration, in particular at Christ's proper left knee and left hand. There is a loss to the Virgin's proper right index finger, with small fissures in this area. There is a small drilled hole to the reverse. There is minor wear and non-active worming to the wood frame.

Catalogue Note
The present relief is near-identical in composition to a marble relief by Guglielmo della Porta in the Museo di Castello Sforzesco, Milan. There is also a bronze version from the collection of J. Pierpont Morgan, which is now in the University of Michigan Museum, Ann Arbor. Only certain small details, such as the tree in the top right corner, and the wider background landscape, are modelled differently. Avery (op.cit., p. 121) mentions that several versions in materials such as terracotta and papier-maché exist.
