Description

- Italian, probably Florence, 15th century
Condition
There is dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are areas of restoration, in particular to the fringe of the hair above the forehead on both sides and further restorations at either sides of the neck, around the collar, and at the base at the front (Christ's sternum). These may conceal past fractures, as there is a slightly visible fissure running from the centre of the base up into the chest. A further restored fissure runs from behind the proper left shoulder across the back down to the centre of the base at the back, and there is another running horizontally across the back of the head. Various minor fissures are seen at the sides of both arms and there is also one down the centre of the forehead. There are various minor losses, notably to the shirt, the edges of the base and to the brow. There is a filled hole in the top of the head. Areas of composite restoration are visible at the interior. The surface is covered in a slip. Otherwise the condition is stable.

Catalogue Note
This fine Renaissance bust compares with the face of a Florentine 15th-century terracotta Christ in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. A. 43-1937). Note the similar pinched facial features.
The present lot is offered with a thermoluminescence analysis report from Oxford Authentication Ltd dated 20 November 2013 stating that the sample (No: N113m64) was last fired between 300 and 600 years ago.
