Condition

Overall the condition of the pyx is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is wear to the gilding throughout and there are nicks to the edges of the drum and lid. The ornament on top was lost. The hinge is slightly loose. There are some losses to the enamel, including around the hinge and to the dark blue stripes of the coats of arms on the sides.

Catalogue Note

Coats of arms were often used on Limoges enamels as purely ornamental devices indicative of the age of chivalry. Compare for example a pyx in the Musée de Cluny illustrated in E. Rupin, L'Oeuvre de Limoges, Paris, 1977, p. 207, fig. 266.
