Catalogue Note

This very fine marble is carved after one of the most celebrated antique sculptures, the Arrotino (the blade-sharpener), housed in the Uffizi in Florence. The powerful expression of the model, one of concern or guilty attentiveness, has led to the belief that the statue portrays a malevolent subject matter; it has most popularly been described as a Scythian executioner waiting to flay the satyr Marsyas, who suffered this punishment after losing a musical contest against Apollo.
