Description

  • Casket
  • red, white and yellow amber and bone, mounted on a wood core
  • North German, probably Danzig, circa 1700

Condition

Several pieces of amber are lost and several are unstable. Some of the pieces may have been reattached. Glue residues are visible in some areas. There is an old restoration to the back side panel. There are some chips to the amber. There is a loss to one of the knopped feet. There is very minor splitting to some of the amber. The draw does not appear to open. The casket would benefit from professional conservation.

Catalogue Note

Compare with the little amber box in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. C.44-1923), which is thought to date to the late 17th or early 18th centuries. Its lid is likewise centered with an octagonal amber panel delicately incised to the reverse with a vignette.
