Overall the condition of the ivory is very good with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The hunter in the background on the left was reattached. There is some glue from old labels on the underside.

The density of carving and the flamboyant Baroque style of the present ivory confirm that it was made in Trapani, Sicily, in the 17th century. Compare the predella scene with the little reliefs from a 17th century Trapanese house altar from the Thürn und Taxis collection, sold at Sotheby's on 12 October 1993, lot 1052. The frolicking putti compare with those in a Trapanese ivory and coral group dating to circa 1700, which was sold in these rooms on 5 December 2007, lot 55.
