Catalogue Note
Little is known about the sculptor Duchoiselle, except that he supplied ceiling reliefs for the Louvre and Garnier's Opera in 1882. Other examples of this model were produced in marble by the Frilli Gallery, Florence. The idealized American Indian female, representing the artistic personification of the country itself, was a popular 19th-century subject for both American and European sculptors.
