Catalogue Note
FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT WORKS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (the other being the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's works, 1623). The King James Bible, also known as the Authorised version, was proposed at the Hampton Court Conference called by James I in 1604, and was result of five years work by 54 translators. Deeply indebted to previous translations (from Tyndale to Douai) it can justly be described as the triumphant culmination of eighty years of scholarship and study, and perhaps as the greatest work ever produced by a committee. Copies of the Great "She" Bible were made up of a combination of two different sets of sheets, so copies often vary.
