Regarded as one the finest American military memoirs, Crusade in Europe was published the same year that Eisenhower had forgone what many saw as his only opportunity to stand as a presidential candidate. Despite his longstanding friendship with Churchill, Eisenhower also had much in common with Attlee, who had himself been a successful military leader during World War I.
