Description

  • Shepard, E.H.
  • Matching pair of drawings from The House at Pooh Corner, comprising:
  • ink drawings on paper
1) "'What do Jagulars do?' asked Piglet", 130 by 288mm.; 2) "We can't get down, we can't get down" 136 by 250mm.' both ink drawings with added gouache, both signed lower right corner, mounted, framed and glazed, some minor browning at edges of mount aperture

Condition

Both drawings are presented in a single mount. As usual there is some browning to the extremities of the mount apertures, due to the mount. There is also some uniform and consistent browning to the board, as usual. These are strong and unfaded ink drawings and the artist's board does not show any obvious paper blemishes.

Catalogue Note

A pair of illustrations originally published on pages 64-65 of the fourth and final Winnie-the-Pooh book (Methuen, 1928). The illustrations are from chapter four ('In which it is shown that Tiggers don't climb trees'). It is RARE TO FIND CORRESPONDING PAIRS OR OTHER GROUPS OF WINNIE-THE-POOH ILLUSTRATIONS TOGETHER.

Of the 105 illustrations within the text of The House at Pooh Corner, the only book in the series to include Tigger, the character appears in a mere 18. TheĀ second drawing is therefore ONE OF ONLY 18 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS OF TIGGER FOR THE ORIGINAL BOOK.

The first illustration includes the caption in Shepard's hand below the mount. The caption for the second illustration is preserved on the back of the frame. As usual both are signed inĀ ink with the artist's address on the reverse of the artist's board.
