Catalogue Note

Rev. Canon Theodore Wood's Birds One Should Know was published by Gay and Hancock in 1921. It contained 8 coloured plates, however only 4 of these are present in the present lot (Kestrel, Lapwing, Barn Owl, Heads of 15 Birds), but it would appear that this is a full set of the ink and ink and wash drawings. The design for the cover is also present - drawn by another artist, being initialled 'G.S.' Included with the lot is a copy of the book (lacking one of the plates).

Roland Green, F.Z.S., was born in Kent, the son of a taxidermist from whom he learnt the anatomy of birds, but spent much of his life in Norfolk. He specialised in birds in flight, working directly from source rather than from photographs. He produced several books for Gay and Hancock and also worked on Gregory Mathews' 12 volume The Birds of Australia, 1910-1927.
