Catalogue Note

Christopher Sandford had originally perceived the illustrations as being engraved on wood, however Buckland Wright persuaded him to accept his copper plates. The book almost never came into being, for at the outbreak of the Second World War, the artist was in the south of France and the copper plates were in Paris. He managed to return home bringing the plates with him, but wider recognition of the book, although universally admired, was hindered by the War.
