Catalogue Note
Dorothea Braby studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under John Farleigh and Noel Rooke and was a good friend of Owen Rutter and his family. Mr Chambers and Persephone was the first book she illustrated for the Press, however she went on to become one of their most widely-used illustrators.
This copy is accompanied by 5 sheets of original pencil sketches by Dorothea Braby which appear to be preliminary versions of some of the final wood-engraved plates. Also included are 2 early pulls of 2 of the full-page wood-engravings, annotated and signed by the artist, as well as one of the other full-page wood-engravings printed on japon, signed and dated by the artist. Accompanying the illustrations is a proof of the text only, date-stamped 11 July 1937.
