Catalogue Note

Owen Rutter was establishing a reputation for scholarly work with his Golden Cockerel volumes. Mr Glasspoole and the Chinese Pirates was the second collaboration between Rutter and Gibbings, and their first-hand knowledge of the South China Seas led to it being highly regarded by contemporary reviewers, "One of the gems of pirate literature ... one of the most delightful products of this famous press."

This copy is accompanied by a collection of additional material relating to the production of the book, comprising: 4 autograph or typed letters signed to and from Owen Rutter about the book; a manuscript sheet of notes for Christopher Sandford from Rutter about the text and introduction, dated 18.12.34; typed note on Record of Service of Richard Glasspoole; original autograph manuscript of the text and further notes by Rutter; original autograph manuscript of the introduction by Rutter;  2pp. autograph manuscript notes on the introduction by Sandford; corrected typescript of the introduction; two further typescripts by Rutter; galley proofs annotated by hand with early pulls of 2 of Gibbings' engravings; a few page proofs; newspaper clippings, prospectus, annotated postcard and envelope from the Press.
