Catalogue Note
Publication of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales followed on from the highly successful edition of Troilus and Criseyde, the first of the great books produced by the Press, which Gill and Gibbings had worked on intensively for publication in 1927. Publication of The Canterbury Tales was regarded as a major literary event and was widely covered in the press throughout the four-year period. It proved a profitable title for the Press and one that enhanced its reputation.
