Catalogue Note
Gill earned less for his engravings in Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi than for his previous work, Song of Songs, however his reputation increased as the edition sold out. The engravings were "clearly related to the sculptures of the Stations of the Cross which Gill had cut for Westminster Cathedral ten years earlier. In the marriage of type and engravings, and the very skilful use of colour for initials and title, it shows how well Gill and Gibbings were now working together."
