Catalogue Note
Eric Gill initially produced a series of engravings intended for this work which were deemed "too enthusiastic, too frank, too rampant for Golden Cockerel to risk." A toned-down set eventually appeared in the book, but even they were deemed indecent. Gibbings began to realise that Gill and Powys Mathers together would happily push the Press beyond a limit of decency. Gill subsequently issued his original engravings himself.
