Catalogue Note

Sonnets and Verses by Enid Clay was the first book produced by the Golden Cockerel Press in collaboration with Eric Gill. Originally intended for publication by the S. Dominic's Press, when Gill and Hilary Pepler quarrelled, J.G. Wilson of Bumpus' Bookshop suggested they work with Gibbings at his Golden Cockerel Press. This charming book, which laid the foundation for some of the finest private press books of the 20th century, was selected as the book for 1925 by the Double Crown Club.

Glue and Lacquer was the last book to be issued by the Press containing Gill's work. He had prepared the drawings while in hospital during the last week of his life. After his death his son-in-law, Denis Tegetmeier, interpreted these onto copper.
