Catalogue Note

This lot records the development of the Golden Cockerel Press from 1920 and its formation under Harold Midgley Taylor, through its flourishing early years under Robert and Moira Gibbings, to its latter years in the hands of Christoper Sandford, Anthony Sandford, Owen Rutter and Francis Newbery before its final production in December 1961.

Included in the lot are 143 prospectuses, catalogues, specimen pages, order forms and similar related material including: Spring 1921, First List of Publications from The Golden Cockerel Press; List of Publication of The Golden Cockerel Press, Spring 1922; The Golden Cockerel Press Spring List 1925; A Bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press April 1921-December 1927, Random House, New York; The Golden Cockerel Press lists for 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934.

Also included is a collection of working material relating to at least 17 of the Press' own publications as well as to their annual lists and catalogues, comprising: autograph manuscripts and typescripts, usually for introductions or prospectuses, original artwork for pictorial title-pages and dust jackets, mock-ups, page proofs and specimen pages, paper samples, and correspondence, much of the material heavily annotated by various hands, some by Christopher Sandford and Owen Rutter; including Ana the Runner, 3pcs; Here's Flowers, 7pcs; Tomorrow's Star, 9pcs; White Llama, 4pcs; Aphrodite's Cockerel, 4pcs; Voyage around the World, 5pcs; Labyrinth of the World, 2 pcs; Against Women, 8pcs; Nelson's Letters, 15pcs; Zastrozzi, pcs.
