Catalogue Note

This collection records the achievements of some of the main pioneers in photography, starting with L.D. Du Hauron (1837-1930, "the inventor of colour photography"), whose celebrated Heliochrome view of his home town of Agen is a classic image.  Another famous inventor is William Friese-Greene (1855-1921), whose many patents culminate in No.13,883, for cinematography in 1900.  There are several patents by Frederic Eugene Ives (1856–1937), who developed the "Chromoscope" the 1890s, using three superimposed colour-filtered images, and by the prolific Jan Szczepanik (1872-1926) in Vienna, whose many inventions, especially in the motion picture industry, photography and television are still relevant today.  Hermann Vogel (1834-1898) discovered the sensitizing action of aniline dyes on silver salts.
