Catalogue Note
Reproduced on pages 72, 83 and 80, respectively, of Winnie-the-Pooh (Methuen, 1926). All three illustrations are from the chapter six of the book entitled 'In which Eeyore has a birthday and gets two presents'. Below the mount of the first piece is an erased word reading "Cottleston". At this point in the story, Pooh sings the song of 'Cottleston Pie' whilst sitting thinking. The second piece, of Eeyore, is provided with a title by Shepard "Fell down for the third time".
These three drawings comprised item 49 in the sale of Winnie-the-Pooh drawings held at The Sporting Gallery in 1926. The exhibition catalogue provides the title of "Pooh, Eeyore and Owl". This is the first time these drawings have been offered for sale in just under ninety years.
