Catalogue Note

This volume brings together uncommon or important works by significant or influential Restoration poets, with Waller and Dryden arguably the two most distinguished of their age. Only one copy of Dryden's Astraea Redux, a royalist panegyric celebrating the new regime of King Charles II, has been sold at auction since 1975. Waller's Instruction to a Painter eulogistically celebrated the Battle of Lowestoft in June 1665, and initiated a series of satirical counterparts. The work by the powerful Irish statesman Roger Boyle, the first earl of Orrery, is rare. It is Boyle who is credited with introducing rhyming "heroic drama" to the Restoration stage.
