Catalogue Note
A FINE AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY. At the time of this inscription, August Morel, Breton poet and critic, had just begun work on his translation of Ulysses. He had been enlisted by Adrienne Monnier to help clear up the translational morass. The poet and novelist Valery Larbaud, then the reigning force in France in criticism and translation of foreign works, had been the first choice for the job. However he was fearful that the task of a full translation of Ulysses would infringe on his own creative work so wished to translate only portions. Joyce complained to his patron Harriet Shaw Weaver and Morel was called in by Monnier – proprietor of the Maison des Amis des Livres, across the street from which her companion Sylvia Beach had set up Shakespeare and Company – to do the bulk of the translating. He completed the work while living on the island Belle-Isle-sur-Mer, making intermittent trips to Paris to consult with Monnier, Joyce himself, or Larbaud.
