A fine group of Tenniel family portraits comprising two early portraits of John Tenniel’s parents, two later portraits of John Tenniel’s parents by the artist, a portrait of Tenniel’s first wife by the artist and a fine photograph of the artist.



Frankie Morris notes of Robinson’s portraits that “the portraitist… has included, beyond the conventional draperies and columns, some attractive countryside suggestive of landed status. There is the misty softness of youth, the assurance of affluence about the pair” (see Artist of Wonderland, University of Virginia Press, 2005, p.17). Frankie Morris notes of the portrait of Julia that “the marriage was to be brief as Julia was already consumptive… on 23 January 1856, after little more than two years of marriage, Julia Tenniel died… Then, from memory, he [John Tenniel] painted a portrait…, a small watercolour (now in family possession) showing a three-quarter length figure…” (see p.57)
