The Hungarian writer and illustrator Kate Seredy (1899–1975) was awarded the Newbery medal in 1938 (with honours in 1936 and 1940). She won the Caldecott medal in 1945. This illustration appears to depict Gretel forcing the witch into the oven from Hansel and Gretel.
