Kew Gardens, one of three defining short fictions written by Woolf between 1917 and 1920 which sought a completely new expression of the novel, rejecting traditional narrative coherence in favour of 'an ordinary mind on an ordinary day'. Woolf's aim was "to find in the ‘moment of being’ a climactic inward event, parallel to what her friend T. S. Eliot termed ‘unattended moments’ and what James Joyce termed ‘epiphany’...The Victorians had trusted language to say just what they meant; the moderns found this impossible, and therefore communicated through symbols—the lighthouse or the waves—which require a reciprocal effort on the part of the reader..."
