Madeleine Lucette (1858-1934) was an actress and playwright. Her early career included an engagement with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and she was part of the first provincial production of H.M.S. Pinafore, starring J.H. Ryley (c.1841-1922), later her husband. She appeared on both the English and American stage and, in July 1904, played Ophelia opposite W.S. Gilbert's King Claudius in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Her plays included Christopher, Jr. (1895), An American Citizen (1897), On and Off (1898), Richard Savage (1900), Mice and Men (1901), An American Invasion (1902), The Grass Widow (1902), Mrs. Grundy (1905), The Great Conspiracy (1907) and The Sugar Bowl (1907).
Wilson notes that "copies exist both with and without printer's imprint... most copies examined lack the imprint".
