Description
- Heaney, Seamus
- Ugolino. Dublin: the Dolmen Press for Andrew Carpenter, 1979
- ink on paper
4to, first edition, original lithographs by Louis Le Brocquy, designed by Liam Miller, no.122 of 125 numbered copies (of which this is one of 30 numbered copies offered for sale signed by author, illustrator, publisher and printer), original limp black goatskin by Museum Binders of Dublin, orange endpapers, original matching black slipcase, preserved in specially-made green cloth folding box
Ugolino also appeared as the final poem in Heaney’s collection of the same year, Field Work. The narrative poem is a re-telling of the story of Archbishop Roger of Pisa and Count Ugolino as recounted in Cantos xxxii and xxxiii of Dante’s Inferno. Heaney was drawn to the material because he sensed “there was something intimate, almost carnal, about these feuds and sorrows of mediaeval Pisa, something that could perhaps mesh with and house the equivalent and destructive energies at work in, say, contemporary Belfast” (foreword).
