  • Two items relating to the printing of Beardsley’s illustrations, comprising:
  • PAPER & COPPER PLATE
i) proof printing of Leonard Smithers publisher’s device, 46 by 35mm. on leaf of brown paper, 108 by 89mm., mounted, framed and glazed; ii)engraved copper plate of ‘John and Salome’, 249 by 179mm. (plate size) on total size of 256 by 187mm., the image on the plate is not reversed or in negative, the lower surface is inked in black

The publisher’s device appears on the lower wrapper of The Savoy. It is included, without the name of the publisher, as ‘Siegfried’ within The Later Work of Aubrey Beardsley (1901). ‘John and Salome’ was one of the illustrations to Salome which was excluded from the first edition in 1894. It was featured in The Early Work of Aubrey Beardsley (1899) where it was described as ‘hitherto unpublished’ and first printed within an edition of the play in 1904.
