First edition in cloth of the author's first published fiction, in which she sought to create a new fiction grounded in the moral realities of everyday experience. Scenes of Clerical Life was originally published serially in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine between January and November 1857. This first edition in book form was published in January 1858, in 1050 copies.
