Browne, presentation copy inscribed by the author on recto of initial blank ("from | Charles Dickens | Fourteenth December 1843"), with further inscription beneath ("Presented by Charles Dickens | to TB Brindley, on the | occasion of his Dedi- | cation of a volume of | Poems to that celebrated | author"), printed copy of Brindley's poem "Summer" affixed to second blank, later full green morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, gilt dentelles, silk endpapers, all edges gilt, preserved in slipcase, tiny tear to final leaf, some minor soiling, spine slightly faded

Thomas Bardel Brindley, author and mesmerist, of Stourbridge, wrote Hints, Humorous and Satirical, to all the World and his Wife and The Evening Walk and other Poems. After he dedicated his book Of the Omnipotence of the Deity and other Poems (third edition, 1843) to Dickens the novelist wrote to Brindley on 26th June, 1843:  "My Dear Sir, In consequence of your book and kind letter having been sent to my Publishers (where parcels addressed to me accumulate until there is a great heap to be opened) I have only just now received them.  I need not assure you that this is the sole cause of the present tardy acknowledgment of your glowing dedication.  Although it puts my modesty to the blush, and makes it very rosy indeed, I am truly obliged to you for your earnest and fervent tribute.  I am sure you mean and feel what you say;  and this consoles me for not deserving it.  I shall not forget your request, with which I am delighted to comply.  My booksellers shall find means of forwarding to you a couple of Volumes, which pray put on your shelves in remembrance of me ..." (The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition, vol. III, p.515)

One of the volumes Dickens sent was Barnaby Rudge; the second was this copy of The Old Curiosity Shop.
