12mo, 3 volumes, first edition, contemporary orange-red boards with lettering on spine in gilt, green edges, first two volumes rebacked preserving original spines, lacking half-title in second volume, loss to inner margin of title-page in volume two (not affecting text and repaired), occasional spotting

One of the author's sea stories, this edition is extremely rare. Spiller and Blackburn in their bibliography note that the publishing arrangement was to "reap the advantages of an actual copyright in the United States, a virtual copyright in England, and the right of prior publication in France and Germany... The Water-Witch is the only genuine Continental first of the novels..."Only about 10 copies of this edition are thought to have survived. The novel was published in London on 14 October and in Philadelphia on 11 December 1830.
