A contribution to the Elizabethan succession question by Robert Persons, Superior of the Jesuit Mission to England, written in 1596. The failure of Spanish attempts to invade England and the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, had left Catholics pinning their hopes on a favourable succession after the death of Elizabeth. This tract, which circulated in manuscript in the final years of Elizabeth's reign, sets out in detail Persons plans for the future re-introduction of Catholicism to England. It was not printed until 1690, when it was issued as a warning against power-hungry Jesuits.

Provenance

Henry Hely Hutchinson (bookplate); "G. Dyer" (ownership inscription); "[Thomas] Rodd £3.3" (pencil note recording purchase)
