Catalogue Note
Probably from the library of the 'Wizard Earl'. This volume has the Earl's later, larger book-badge (Batho, "The Library of the 'Wizard' Earl...", in The Library, 5th series, 15 (1960), pp.246-61) which is recorded as appearing "indiscriminately on the books of both the ninth Earl and his son the tenth Earl, so that by itself it proves no more than that the volume was in the Percy collection between 1593, when the ninth Earl became a Knight of the Garter, and 1668, when the tenth Earl died" (op.cit., p.252). However the present work also bears the 9th Earl's press-mark on the upper paste-down (see Batho, plate 1). Portions of Percy's library survive at Petworth and Alnwick, but many printed books have been dispersed over the centuries, including, for instance, the sale at Sotheby's on 23/24 April 1928.
