Catalogue Note

Marcantonio de Dominis (1560-1624) became archbishop of Spalato in 1602. De Dominis was close to the English ambassador to Venice at the time, Dudley Carleton, which led to him seeking the protection of James I when he was in conflict with the Vatican over his see. He came to England in 1617 and spent much of his time writing, making use of the services of the royal typographer, John Bill. By 1621 relations with the English had broken down and he returned to Italy, pardoned by the new Pope. However, when Urban VIII came to power, de Dominis was put on trial again and despite dying before his trial finished, he was condemned posthumously.
