Description

  • Three manuscript recipe books, eighteenth century, comprising:
  • ink on paper
i) Collection of recipes for pies, meat and fish dishes, cakes, savouries, puddings, preserves, wines and other dishes, including some medical prescriptions, 124 numbered entries mostly in a single fluent hand, and further unnumbered entries in several hands, about 150 pages, with five leaves of additional recipes loosely inserted, 4to, mid-eighteenth century, contemporary panelled calf, worn, occasional marks or staining
ii) "Choice Receipts in Cookery &c.", entries written from both ends of the volume in several hands, including a few crude sketches of ships, about 134 pages, 4to, one page dated 1781, and another with the name "Captain [John] Ramsden | of the [East India Company ship] Princess Amelia | Captain Turner", contemporary calf, in a grey cloth box, rebacked, soiling
iii) Collection of culinary recipes including "Custard Sack Posset", "Hartshorn Flummery", and "The Best Orange Pudding that was ever tasted", mostly neatly written in an attractive hand on 74 numbered pages with a contemporary index, later additions in a different hand, with medical prescriptions (including "A Receipt against a Consumption" from Lady Hopson) written from the reverse in two hands, 13 pages, in total about 104 pages, plus blanks, large 4to, dated 3 January 1774 on pastedown, contemporary vellum, in a blue cloth folding box, offprint of an article loosely inserted, binding soiled, spine renewed
