The political cartoonist Ernest Forbes (1879–1962) was born in Yorkshire and, as "The Hermit", contributed caricatures and cartoons to the Yorkshire Evening News. Later work included pieces for the Yorkshire Post and the Illustrated London News. Forbes moved to Ireland in 1920 and produced work under the names "Shemus" and "Cormac". Returning to Yorkshire he became a landscape and portrait painter.
