- Two caricatures, comprising:
- ink on paper
i) Owen Seaman, 320 by 210mm., ink and watercolour drawing, signed “Max” lower right with indistinct title lower left, framed and glazed, minor hole upper right; ii) Arthur Bourchier, 290 by 150mm., ink and monochrome watercolour drawing, signed “Max” middle right, titled at foot, mounted, framed and glazed, some minor browning
Owen Seaman (1861-1936) was a parodist and editor of Punch. A.A. Milne worked as his assistant and Seaman’s disposition has been said to have inspired the temperament of Eeyore. Arthur Bourchier (1864-1924) was an actor-manager. W.S. Gilbert remarked of his Hamlet, “At last we can settle whether Bacon or Shakespeare wrote the plays. Have the coffins opened and whichever has turned in his grave is the author.”
