Condition
Not examined out of frame. The sheet appears to be fully laid down onto a supporting board.
There is some surface dirt across the sheets and scattered bleached flecks in areas including but not limited to the sky. Areas in each of the three figures also seem bleached. These areas appear to be the result of minor changes in the poses of the figures and therefore are likely to be the result of the artist's working method. The sheet may well have discoloured over time and the pigments might have also faded. Overall and subject to the above the work appears to be in good condition.
The work is presented to edge in a black wooden frame.

Catalogue Note
The view in the present drawing may be one of those drawn by Crane at Villa Haig, the fine home on Monte Parioli of two kindly English matrons, the Misses Haig, who allowed the artist to draw and paint in their beautiful gardens which had fine views to the north over the city of Rome and St Peter’s. While in Rome in the winter of 1872 Crane met Hon. Edward Lyulph Stanley, 4thBaron Sheffield and his bride Katherine, daughter of the Pre-Raphaelite art collector Sir Isaac Lothian Bell. The Stanleys commissioned several drawings of Rome by Crane and upon his return to London, the artist painted the portrait of Katherine Stanley. Lady Maude Whyte was Clementine's aunt (see lot 20). Christopher Soames proposed to Mary Soames on the steps of St. Peter's Rome.
