Condition
These deed boxes are great fun and have been used by the Churchill and Soames family for many years for storage which in part explains their rather tired condition, which is understandable when their original function is considered! Most recently they have been stored in an outdoor storage building at West House. This exposure to the elements shows.
The black painted surface of both is scratched. The front of the lid, above the painted words Mrs Churchill with a series of scratches and old marks. There are further stains, scratches and old marks throughout. Each with losses to paint and rust to the base and underside. Both are solid and would require a new key.

Catalogue Note
Charles and Jeremiah Chubb founded the Chubb Company in 1813 in Wolverhampton, two years later they opened another shop in St Paul's Yard, London. Primarily lock makers the brothers expanded their operation to include safe construction and more complicated security systems. In 1823 the company was recognised by the government and given a licence to supply locks and secure boxes to the Post Office and HM Prison Service. During the war years the Chubb factory in Wolverhampton, along with many manufacturing firms, changed their production in accordance with the country’s needs.
