Catalogue Note

Winston started at Harrow School near London in April 1888. He found his years at the school slightly challenging and was not thought of as a good student. However, Winston’s ability to memorize lines was clearly apparent while at Harrow. He entered a competition and won a school prize for reciting from memory 1,200 lines from Macaulay’s long poem Lays of Ancient Rome. Churchill would return to Harrow many times during his life. He was proud of Harrow’s past heroes – Sheridan and Peel, Ashley and Byron, and in the modern ‘greats’, Pandit Nehru and King Hussein. Mary continued to support the school throughout her life and was both a Governor of the School and the President of the Harrow Association. She attended the Harrow School songs every year until she died.
