Catalogue Note

Patsy was Mary's pony that she would ride at Chartwell. In 1939, as Winston Churchill was called to join the War Cabinet and thus to live in London, Mary had to dispose of her 'menagerie'. 'A painful parting was from my beloved Patsy.... I sobbed into my diary, while acknowledging that I must keep a sense of proportion as the civilized world crashed around our ears. Happily for me, her new owner kept her stabled at Scamperdale, and most kindly allowed me to go on riding her' (Mary Soames, A Daughter's Tale, Doubleday, London, 2011, p.178).
