Catalogue Note
These wine coasters were most probably a birthday present from 'The Prof', one of Winston's best friends (see lot 249 for more information), as he was turning 79. 1953 had been an important year for Winston as he became a Knight of the Garter and received the Noble Prize in Literature for 'for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values' ('Literature 1953'. Nobelprize.org. Retrieved 2009-08-09). In June that year however, he suffered a stroke which affected his speech and ability to walk forcing him to retire from public life at Chartwell until the October. He retired as Prime Minister in 1955.
