Catalogue Note
In the present work, Thomas Musgrove Joy has depicted a lively scene of finely dressed women gathered on the Ladies Lawn at Goodwood, with a few top-hatted gentlemen among them. Fashion was as integral a part of horseracing then as it is today, and Joy's swift and dynamic brushwork evokes a buoyant, social atmosphere. In the background can be seen the old grandstand which was built in 1830 (replaced today by the March Stand) and Trundle Hill running up to it, where horses pulled up until 1967. The famous view across the South Downs is depicted by the soft, blue undulating hills which roll into the distance.
The present picture was possibly a sketch for a painting exhibited posthumously at the Royal Society of British Artists, 1866, as Fête Champtre. 'Fête Champtres' were held regularly at Goodwood as popular social occasions, often alongside the races.
A similar view appears in an engraving in The Illustrated London News, 6 August 1864.
