Catalogue Note
Similarly decorated japanned tôle goods were produced by the Pontypool factory owned by the Allgood family from the mid-18th century until circa 1820. Urns such as the offered pair were conceived for moving hot chestnuts from the hearth to the table. From the third quarter of the 18th century, Spanish chestnuts were considered a delicacy. These neo-classical urns would most probably have been displayed on a sideboard in a dining room where they may have been ensuite with a tray and other accessories.
