Catalogue Note
This was a well-chosen Christmas gift: Churchill had been an admirer of Sassoon from the time of his World War I poetry, and his sometime private secretary, Eddie Marsh, had been a friend and mentor to Sassoon. Churchill had learnt by heart several of the poems in Sassoon's collection Counter Attack, and he met the protesting war hero in the summer of 1918 to try and convert him back to the military cause.
