Catalogue Note

In 1984, Wucius moved to the United States whereupon he drew inspiration from his home in Minnesota and the American West. For several years, he created nine paintings in the Yellowstone National Park series. Starting from the dry brushwork and landscapes formats of the Northern Song tradition, he initially struggled with developing the appropriate brushstrokes to capture the American tree and rock formations. With each successive work, he cultivated a drier and looser formula that evolved away from traditional influences. Yellowstone Falls is particularly unique in the series for its use of full color and off-set structure that distinguishes it from his earlier monochromatic palette and traditional Chinese birds-eye landscape perspective.
